Laser Treatment of
Pigmented Lesions
Treatment of Pigmented Lesions (Age spot, Tattoo, Lentigo)
Pigmented lesions, are areas of the skin that become discolored. There are a variety of examples of these conditions most commonly freckles and age spots.
Not all pigmented lesions are benign. Hence, it is very important to have your lesion examined by a dermatologist making sure it is benign before any treatment. Do not treat any lesion, if it is not examined by the physician. This can put your health in risk.
For many pigmented lesions, we use laser technology. In these cases, specific energy is used to penetrate the skin for a very short period of time. With ultra short-pulsed lasers, pigmentation, tattoos, dirt tattoos caused by accidents, as well as permanent make-up can be removed gently and precisely. The laser beam is selectively absorbed by the color pigments in the skin thus breaking them up into tiny fragments. These can then be broken down by the body. The surrounding skin remains undamaged due to the selectiveness and precision of the laser beam. More than one treatment is generally required to achieve the desired result.
Laser treatment for pigmented lesions and tattoos is a low-pain procedure, normally performed without anesthesia. The short laser flashes feel like fine, superficial pinpricks. The treated area looks white for the some minutes. Afterwards, the skin will redden with a reddish-brown discoloration. Any scabs or crusts, that may form, will heal as a normal abrasion. After some time the treatment results become visible: the new rosy-white skin will assume the natural skin color. For the complete removal of tattoos, several treatment sessions are necessary at intervals of a few weeks. The number of sessions needed depends on the quantity of color pigments in the skin.
